Do you sometimes feel like you're not being who you really are? That you're being a whole lot of things for other people? Super mum, provider dad, best grades daughter, sports hero son, host with the most, community saviour, best friend to all, [_fill in your own stick on identities here_]? It's easy to get lost in that maze, hey? So ask this question to remind yourself that you can choose to be YOU: "If I were me, who would I be?" You might even (re)discover that being who you truly be is more than just fine, it's awesome.
What decisions have you made about who or what you must be? Was that your idea or someone else's? Whatever yours reasons, decisions will only limit you. Questions on the other hand will open your eyes to possibilities you might not have been willing or able to see before, and empower you to choose consciously what you'd really like. So ask: "What have I decided I must be. If I could choose anything, who would I be?" You may choose the same. Or you may not. In any case, the choice will be consciously yours. And how will that make you feel?
Has someone, sometime sold you the idea you can't be something? You're not clever, pretty, thin, tall, handsome, rich, strong, creative, [__fill in your own limitation here__] enough to be that? What if that weren't true? Use this question to unlock the doors to everything you have decided it is not possible to be. You might not end up with exactly what you started out thinking you'd like, but you will no longer be limited by someone else's 'can'ts'. And you may (re)discover the greater you, beyond anything you could have ever imagined. What if you could be you and change the world?
Ask this when you can't seem to create your life the way you'd really like it. You may have some decisions buried deep down that you have never thought to question. Or you may simply believe somethings can't be changed. For example where you have to live, study or work, or what you have to do or be for someone else. What if you could change anything? What would you choose? Ask this question to help you start seeing where you've been keeping yourself stuck with unspoken decisions, then ask 'what else is possible?'
One of the greatest limitation in life, especially in business, is when we decide something is 'right', 'perfect' or 'the best'. The right person for the job/to be with, the right product, the right subject to study, the right career, the right school/house/company. Why? It stops us looking for anything greater. Even if your life is totally awesome and you don't feel stuck, ask this question. It's an invitation for greater awesomeness. If you're in business, it will keep your products or services ahead of everyone else's. And who wouldn't like that?
Are you confused about something? Perhaps you are simply missing some information? So rather than spiraling into a 'confusion tizz' ask: What information do I need? Who do I need to speak to? What if by adding missing information, you replaced confusion with clarity? Would your life be easier?
Use this when you feel trapped and in a no-choice universe. When did your parents, teachers, bosses, co-workers, friends, children and EVERYONE sell you on the idea you have no choice but to serve them? Guess what. You ALWAYS have a choice. Infinite choices in fact. So remind yourself. Just ask and they will come flooding in.
What would you like to have show up in your life? A new job, house, friends, lover, more money, greater ease, better health or simply more fun? Whatever THAT is, invite it into your life with this question AND let go of any conclusions you might have made about what it will look like and how it will show up. You can add 'or something greater than I could possibly imagine' at the end. That way you will create infinite possibilities, not just things you have decided would be 'right'. Play and enjoy!
How often do you feel tired simply because you're tired of it? What could you add to your work/business/life that would make it more fun? It's like 5pm on Friday afternoon and you've just had enough and you feel tired. And then you go our with your friends for dinner, chatting, dancing or watching sport and suddenly you come to life! What IS that? What if FUN were enough to keep your energy flowing? So ask: Am I tired or bored? What fun could I add to this?
Do you find you do a lot of stuff for others that you'd really rather not? Other people will ALWAYS try to get you to do stuff for them, using obligation and guilt to control you. What if you started by doing stuff for YOU first? Start by choosing things that feel light to you and that you know will contribute to your life and living. Then when you want to say 'no' to others, smile and pull the energy of joy and say: "Thank you SO much for thinking of me! I'm soooo sorry. That doesn't work for me right now". Then change the subject.
